External Perfection
One of the most distingusing characteristics of Man is in his/her puruit for perfection. Inculcated or Inbuilt? Debatable. Its source may be immaterial but the destination of the pursuit I would like to opinion is significant.
As a young child, I remember a habit that probably sustained my performance in the English Language and that was reading the newspapers. For some reason, I would squat (toilet-style) on the floor and pour over the latest murders, accidents, scientific discoveries and of course how my favourite soccer team - Singapore was fairing in the Malaysia Cup. 25 years later I am still doing it... a daily ritual minus the squat I must confess.
One thing I have noticed of late are the increase in the number of advertisments emphasising the need for external perfection (As the world defines it, of course).
Ads which emphasise the outer aspects of a person are considerably more rampant than they were in the days when Singapore was playing in the Malaysia Cup. It's hard perhaps impossible to find a days paper without an insert promising a "better figure" , an "enhanced bust", smoother complexion, fairer skin, more hair , blacker hair etc. The pursuit for external perfection.
For the last 10 years my own pursuit of perfection was evident in the hunt for the closest shave. I have tried almost every blade in the market and that even included the ones meant for the underarms of the fairer sex. However after having tasted (literally as well) Bodyshop's Shaving Cream for men, I have concluded that it is not in the blade but rather in the lather. Now, I don't care about the choice of blade, I know it's in the cream.
My discovery of that is for me a major breakthrough and therefore a whole new story but the point I am trying to make is that Man in his or her search for and of being beautiful is perhaps looking at the wrong place? The destination of the pursuit - incorrect?
Critiques are going to fume that I am going to leave it hanging like this but I believe I've given you enough food to chew... if you care.
